Sir John joined the board in October 2004 and became Chairman on 1 January 2005. He is a director of Warwick Castle Park Trust Ltd and Borwick Group Limited and a non-executive director of Governance for Owners Group LLP. He was previously Chairman of Inchcape plc and Harrison Lovegrove & Co Ltd.

Sir John worked in the motor industry until 1990 at General Motors, Massey Ferguson and British Leyland, rising to become Chairman and Chief Executive of Jaguar plc. He was Chief Executive of BAA plc from 1990 to 1999 and Chairman of MEPC from 1998 to 2000.

He was also President of the Confederation of British Industry from 2002 to 2004. Sir John was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1986. He is a deputy lieutenant of the County of Warwickshire and since September 2007, Chancellor of Coventry University.

In April 2003, Sir John was asked by the Deputy Prime Minister to conduct a review to consider the skills needed to help deliver the vision and aims of the Sustainable Communities Plan.

The Egan Review: Skills for sustainable communities presents his findings and seeks to:

  • clarify what the term 'sustainable community' means
  • identify who is responsible for leading the delivery of sustainable communities
  • recognise the skills necessary to achieve sustainable
    communities.

Dr Michael Grady
Senior Research Fellow on Marmot Review Team


Mike Grady is Senior Research Fellow at University College, London with the Marmot Review Team supporting the strategic review of health inequalities post 2010.

He has worked as an NHS Chief Executive and Chief Officer in a large Metropolitan Authority.

Mike has a M.A in Social and Community Work, a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies and has recently been awarded a Doctorate from Middlesex University entitled ‘Exploring the parameters of  Leadership’ focused on the impact of Community Development in improving health and wellbeing.

He is an Expert Advisor to the Centre for Public Scrutiny and has worked with a number of Councils to implement the new Patient and Public Involvement Schemes ( LINks) and support OSC functions.

He is also honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds Institute of Health Sciences Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Research. His research interests include community development, empowerment and health inequality.

Alyson McGregor
Programme Director, NHS Yorkshire and the Humber


Over the last 25 years, Alyson has worked in a range of health improvement roles in the public, private and voluntary sector, working with a focus on reducing health inequalities. She has worked primarily in the NHS in operational, strategic and commissioning roles. Alyson is currently the Programme Director  for the Altogether Better Programme, which aims to build the regions capacity to empower communities to improve their health and well-being and reduce health inequalities.  She also provides consultancy support to the Yorkshire & Humber Regional Health Trainer Hub. She has been a PCT Non Executive Director since 2002 and currently sits on the board of NHS Bradford and  Airedale.
