The following organisations and reports are useful sources of information on community cohesion and communication:
- iCoCo carries out research and produces publications. In our reports and publications section, you can access the 2001 report for the Home Office by Ted Cantle 'Community Cohesion: the report of the independent review team', which examined the causes of the 2001 disturbances and made recommendations for change; and the May 2006 report by the ICC 'Review of Community Cohesion in Oldham'.
- The Improvement and Development Agency for local government (IDeA) has information and case studies about cohesion on its web site. Sign up for the IDeA Knowledge bulletin which will update you when new information comes through.
- David Holdstock, head of communications at Hillingdon Council produced a report for the IDeA in 2003 called 'What is the role of local government communications in contributing to the image of refugees in local communities?' For copies of the report, contact David Holdstock.
- The Commission for Racial Equality and the National Association of Citizens Advice Bureaux have produced a report called 'Community Cohesion: our responsibility', and the CRE recently produced a report on tackling right-wing extremists: 'Defeating Organised Racial Hatred - An Information Pack'.
- The Department for Communities and Local Government was created in May 2006, replacing the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. The DCLG has a remit to promote community cohesion and equality, as well as responsibility for housing, urban regeneration, planning and local government.
- The Home Office has published a report called 'Building a Picture of Community Cohesion', with suggestions on how to measure success. This will shortly be updated but is expected to change relatively little.
- The Inter Faith Network for the UK was founded in 1987 to promote good relations between people of different faiths in this country. Its member organisations include representative bodies from the Baha'i; Buddhist; Christian; Hindu; Jain; Jewish; Muslim; Sikh; and Zoroastrian communities; national and local interfaith bodies; and academic institutions and educational bodies concerned with interfaith issues.
- The Local Government Association has produced Guidance on community cohesion - the latest report with partners is called 'Leading Cohesive Communities'.
- The Local Government Information Unit produces a wide range of publications including a six-page briefing called 'Countering the impacts of myths and misinformation: what local authorities can do'. Ipsos MORI produce a range of useful research on public opinion.
- Peacemaker Project is a youth development organisation that brings together young people from a diversity of backgrounds to foster active citizenship and social responsibility. It started in Oldham and now works in many different parts of the country to build bridges between different communities.
There are also two useful guides for journalists:
- The Society of Editors and the Media Trust have produced a practical guide for journalists on reporting community cohesion: 'Reporting Diversity - How Journalists can Contribute to Community Cohesion'.
- The MediaWise Trust has produced an online guide to journalists on reporting asylum and refugee issues.
