Post-colonial melancholia and convivial culture
"Post-colonial melancholia and convivial culture looks at the history of the racial categorisations within societies."
This theory states the importance of world-wide developments. Intercultural exchange in the UK cannot be viewed without consideration of global movements and global communication. Race, ethnicity and nationality are seen as artificially created categories which are a result of historical developments; although these categorisations are important when trying to make sense of the world, they can also be the source of prejudice and discrimination (see conceptual framework); racial differences within a nation can only be fully understood by looking at the history of these categories. Furthermore, one can only understand one's own culture by looking at other cultures. This requires being able to see one's own culture from an outsider's perspective to some extent. By providing the opportunity to engage with difference, intercultural dialogue helps us see our own culture, but also that of others, with different eyes.
