Knowing your community
Before a project begins there needs to be a strong analysis undertaken on knowing the community or communities the project is targeting.
This can be done by accessing information on issues of ‘difference’ from a number of sources including the local authority, regional bodies, national governments and any polls or surveys conducted on the attitudes of those in the area being studied. The survey template’s target audience is participants, but this can be adapted for different stakeholders.
Where data is limited, the project may decide to undertake its own small survey/mapping. The merits of this include providing:
- a clear understanding of what different groups live in an area and the impact this has on cohesion
- knowledge of where there are conflicts between different groups, the factors triggering them and where fault lines might appear in the future
- knowledge of the existing and potential divisions between people from the same group, at national and global level
- an understanding of the barriers and opportunities for bringing people together through intercultural dialogue.
The information can be used to provide a baseline for trust and understanding which can be tested mid and end of the project to assess if there has been a change in attitudes, behaviour and relationships.
