The idea that interculturalism should become the new and progressive narrative for multicultural societies became the main focus of the CRONEM conference at the University of Surrey. The conference, held on the 26th and 27th June, heard Ted Cantle (iCoCo Chair) give a keynote address and set out his vision for a new
policy narrative of interculturalism. Tariq Modood, Nasar Meer and Varun Uberoi, however, defended multicultural policy on the basis that its foundational elements did allow for 'less groupist' and more unifying narratives.

A new an important book by Paul Thomas has validated the community cohesion concept and given credence to cohesion practice. Paul Thomas’s book Youth, Multiculturalism and Community Cohesion (Palgrave Macmillan: Basingstoke) is based on evidence from the areas which Thomas describes as areas of ‘profound ethnic
segregation, and the separate, oppositional and potentially dangerous ethnic and religious identities’. However, ‘the book is not a case study but grounded evidence around the implementation of community cohesion…and the reality of ethnic tension’

The second round of calls for bids for grants opens today, 9 August, with a deadline of 1 September 2010. Grants in this round will need to be spent between 1 December 2010 and 31 March 2011 for a 4 month grant and between 1 December 2010 to 30 August 2011 for a 9 month grant.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has written a series of guides to explain people’s rights and responsibilities under the new Equality Act 2010 which comes into effect in October this year. The act brings together lots of different legislation to make equality law simpler and easier to understand.
